Attracting and Feeding Backyard Birds

At King’s, we believe you can enjoy the fun and relaxation of bird watching from the comfort of your home without a lot of expensive equipment. We are uniquely equipped to provide you with what you need to create a natural and friendly environment that invites wild birds to come visit.

What Birds need:

  • Food – see our lineup of feeders and seed below
  • Water – we have assorted bird baths that also complement the yard with hardscape
  • Shelter and Protection from predators – we are a garden center with a wide selection of native and ornamental trees and shrubs that birds naturally use to hide and keep an eye on their food supply

So, browse through our list, or come in to the garden center and talk with one of our friendly staff.

Feeders

The type of bird feeder you use will determine which birds come to your yard to eat. Do you want hummingbirds, woodpeckers, orioles, chickadees, cardinals, goldfinches or doves?

Some birds want to eat on the ground while others prefer eating while hanging upside down! Did you know that the size of the holes in a feeder and the length of the perches can keep away birds like Starlings while attracting smaller birds?

Maybe you would like to attract ALL the birds to your yard. In this case you will need several different feeder types!

  • Hummingbird feeders hold liquid and have very narrow openings. Change the nectar in the feeders every three days. To make the nectar, add one-part sugar to four parts boiling water and mix. Cool. Do not add red coloring. A great companion to the feeder is a hummingbird swing. Which allows the birds to perch nearby while waiting for another trip to the food.
  • Thistle sock hold Niger ("Thistle") seeds and are made of thinly woven cloth mesh, typically nylon, and filled with thistle or Niger seeds, both of which your local finches should find appealing. Finches use the feeders by clinging to them with their feet and pulling the seeds out through the mesh as they eat.
  • More Birds Squirrel-X1 Birdfeeder by More Birds. Featuring four squirrel-proof feeding ports with long, sturdy perches, the metal sliding sleeve will close all ports simultaneously when a squirrel’s weight is applied to any perch or the roof. The Squirrel X1 can accommodate 4.2 pounds of seed and has a wide mouth for easy filling. The lovely satin nickel finish will complement any outdoor décor and blend in nicely with nature.
  • More Birds Squirrel-X2 Birdfeeder by More Birds. Featuring two-way squirrel protection, the hinged roof tilts with the weight of a squirrel and closes both ports. The two feeding ports with long, sturdy metal perches are spring loaded to close both ports from the weight of a squirrel. The Squirrel X2 can accommodate 4 pounds of seed and has a wide mouth for easy filling. The attractive burnt penny finish will complement any outdoor décor and blend in nicely with nature.
  • More Birds Squirrel-X3 Birdfeeder by More Birds. Featuring two squirrel-proof feeding ports with long, sturdy perches that are spring loaded to close with the weight of a squirrel. The extra tall height from roof to ports also helps to prevent squirrels from reaching the ports. The Squirrel X3 is not only functional, it is also beautifully designed with a mosaic pattern of blue tiles on the trim of the roof and base. The extra-large capacity of the X3 can accommodate 5 pounds of seed and has a wide mouth for easy filling.
  • Suet feeders Wire or mesh baskets that hold suet or pre-packaged suet cakes. Woodpeckers love these!
  • Window feeders Attach these to the outside of your window. Clear plastic lets you see the birds as they eat a few inches from you.

Keep your feeders clean!
Look closely at the feeder. Would you eat or drink from it yourself? It is important that you clean your feeders at least once every two weeks. Use a mixture of 2 gallons of water and 1/4 cup of bleach. Let the feeders air-dry before rehanging them. When you refill feeders, shake out damp seeds that may become moldy. Remove hulls from the feeder. Change the solution in hummingbird feeders at least every three days during warm weather.

Seed

Featuring Cole's Wild Bird Products. While some people think birdseed is just birdseed and it doesn’t matter what kind you put out, we know differently. Birds can be very picky eaters and if you put out the wrong feed, they’ll snub their noses at you and move on to your neighbor’s feeder looking for something better.

Buy the wrong brand and you lose two ways: first, you end up wasting money on seed that most songbirds just kick out of the feeder onto the ground, second – and more important – you miss the increased variety and number of birds you could be attracting with a quality wild bird feed.

Are you tired of seeing everything BUT birds sitting at your feeder? Do you wish you could create a special oasis for your feathered friends to enjoy without inviting the whole neighborhood to chow down on the good stuff you’re serving?

Well now you can get more bird visits than ever with Cole’s line of HOT products that are guaranteed to make your feeders an exclusive Birds-Only café.

So, if you’re tired of feeding more squirrels and annoying flocks of “squawkers” than beautiful songbirds, Safflower is definitely for you.

    Ingredients: 100% Niger Seed
Attracts: Goldfinches, House finches, Purple finches, Pine siskins, Red polls, juncos, and buntings
Notes: Niger Seed, often mistakenly called Thistle seed, is a favorite of beautiful wild finches like the American Goldfinch. Imported from Africa and sterilized upon entry to prevent germination, this special seed is a great source of energy due to its high oil content.

HOT Seed

Are you tired of seeing everything BUT birds sitting at your feeder? Do you wish you could create a special oasis for your feathered friends to enjoy without inviting the whole neighborhood to chow down on the good stuff you’re serving?

Well now you can get more bird visits than ever with Cole’s line of HOT products that are guaranteed to make your feeders an exclusive Birds-Only café. Why do birds love the spicy flavor? Well, the chili pepper plant evolved over time to be attractive to birds that make it a meal. When a bird eats a chili, the seeds remain intact and pass through the bird’s droppings where they are spread over a wide area to grow and multiply. So, chili peppers may taste hot to mammals like people, but birds do not feel the heat at all – all they taste is “Mmm Mmm Good!”.

Accessories

  • Birdbath -Once you’ve got feeders set up, perhaps the best way to make your backyard more attractive to birds is to just add water. Birds need a dependable supply of fresh, clean water for drinking and bathing. Putting a birdbath in your yard may attract birds that don’t eat seeds and wouldn’t otherwise come to your feeders. We have a variety of birdbaths options available.
  • Wind Chimes - Do wind chimes scare birds? While loud wind chimes might scare away birds, soft wind chimes may encourage birds to investigate due to their natural curiosity. Water splashes, bird chatter and insect buzzing may also attract birds
  • Hummingbird Swings – Hummingbirds expend a great deal of energy in flight. They spend a majority of their time perching so they can conserve energy between feedings. They usually choose a favorite perching spot in a tree where they have a direct line of sight to their food source. You can create an attractive perching spot by simply placing a swing next to a feeder or nectar-rich plant.
